Weekend Getaways in the South

By Robin Nobles (January 1998)

Now that the holiday rush is over, maybe we all need to get away for a weekend. So let's see what we can discover on the Internet for a fun, relaxing weekend in the South.

This would be a perfect time to visit New Orleans, before the hectic Mardi Gras season gets under way. New Orleans features websites galore, but none as adorable as Mardi G. Raccoon's, Louisiana's Ambassador of Fun for the Greatest Family Attractions in Louisiana. Go on a Riverboat Cruise, or visit the Aquarium of the Americas or Audubon Zoo.

Or, if you'd rather visit New Orleans during the wild Mardi Gras season, stop by Mardi Gras Madness, the Official Site of Mardi Gras 1998.

Here's a delightful site: y'all: If your heart ain't in Dixie . . . Click on Yonder for a wonderful listing of getaways, hideaways, and roadtrips. Under roadtrips, you'll discover all kinds of fun places to visit in the South, from Tallulah Gorge, the deepest ravine east of the Mississippi, to Dauphin Island, Alabama, for a quiet escape.

How about a trip to North Carolina's Outer Banks, where you can tour majestic lighthouses, visit the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, or visit the Elizabeth II, a 69' sailing boat that represents one of the vessels used to transport Sir Walter Raleigh's colonists to the New World.

If you're more in the mood for excitement, visit the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Stop by the Las Vegas-style gambling casinos lining the Gulf shore, or access detailed itineraries of what you can see or do, based on your own personal interests. Take a tour of Mississippi's Music Heritage, African American Heritage, Civil War monuments, or the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Visit lovely Hilton Head's Island Getaway in South Carolina, complete with world famous golf courses and beachside villas. Or, explore the island on bicycles, riding along miles of paths inside and outside of old Southern plantations.

What about a weekend of visiting covered bridges in Alabama? At AlaWeb's Covered Bridges page, you'll discover those "treasures from a bygone era, like the hoofbeats of a horse-drawn carriage, the sound of an automobile crossing wooden planks, or the combination of Nehi sodas and moon pies—Alabama's few remaining covered bridges are echoes of a nostalgic age."

Do you enjoy mountain biking? At Mountain Biking in the Deep South, you can learn of biking trails all through the mountains of Georgia.

A delightful weekend holiday could be spent visiting the museums and historical monuments of Savannah, Georgia. At Museums in Savannah, you'll learn of attractions such as the Andrew Low House built in 1849, or the Cotton Exchange built in 1887, which was the center of commerce when Savannah was the world's foremost cotton port.
