Learn Sewing Tips Online

By Robin Nobles

During the summer months when it’s too hot to go outside, many folks set up their sewing machines and get to work. Seasoned as well as beginning seamstresses can find helpful sewing sites on the Net.

We’ll begin at the Webstitcher's Sourcebook, a site designed for "artists who sew, embroider, weave, or create in any of the fiber arts." You’ll find activities and color charts to help you design your projects, fashion views where you can learn the latest designer offerings, and even links to sites for costume creation.

By far, one of the best sewing sites on the Net is Sewing at About.com. Learn how to make your own fabric, how to choose and alter patterns, and how to find a discontinued pattern. The site offers an extensive listing of links in categories such as Beginner, Applique, and Machines. This impressive site will keep you occupied for hours.

An impressive resource site for fabrics and patterns online is Sewscape. On the Sewing Pages, you’ll find instructions and resources in categories like Heirloom Sewing, Beginning to Sew, and Sewing Basics. Find fabrics online, or post what you’re looking for on their bulletin board.

People who love to sew will enjoy Threads, the online version of popular Threads magazine. Under Techniques, you’ll learn 20 ways to improve your sewing, how to safeguard and change buttons, and how to sew foolproof shirt and blouse hems. In the Design area of the site, you’ll learn how to artistically cover stains, how to flatten ruffles, and how to sew the simplest summer skirt. You can even learn how to make a dress form.

For an online glossary of over 110 embroidery, counted, canvas work, drawn-thread, and pulled-thread stitches with full instructions and diagrams, visit the Stitch Glossary.

At the Simplicity Pattern Company website, you’ll learn the easy way to a perfect pattern fit, how to sew easy machine hems, and tips on interfacing. You can also view the online edition of Simplicity’s pattern catalog.

Finally, visit Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts Project Center for sewing projects such as Kimonos and Mommy and Me fashions. Under Decorating Projects, you’ll learn how to make swag treatments for your windows, or how to make a simple shower curtain. Learn how to make a holiday tablecloth or how to sew patio door curtains. The site also features quilting and craft projects to keep you busy all summer long.
