Are You Retired? Great! Head for the Net!
by Robin Nobles (9/5/97)
Our Website of the Week is Tom Moseley's home page, which lists all the reasons why Hattiesburg is a great place to retire.
Grandparents Day is September 7, so let's see what Internet resources are available for grandparents or retired folks.
Let's begin with the American Association of Retired Persons, where you'll find topics such as family, health, money, legal issues, and work. Learn tips on mastering money skills or how to eat right and keep in shape. Under Focus on the Internet, read the AARP Guide to Internet Resources Related to Aging.
Visit the Senior Law site for information about Elder Law, Medicare, Medicaid, estate planning, trusts, and the rights of the elderly and disabled.
Retirement Benefits, offered by the Social Security Administration, provides an overview of Social Security retirement benefits.
For health and medical information on aging, visit Just for Seniors. Discover food facts for older adults, a home safety checklist, and resources for women's health.
At the Grandparents Homepage, you'll find ideas on what to do with your grandchildren, read about issues relating to your grandkids, or share ideas or concerns with other grandparents on the Web.
Retire.Net is an interactive, comprehensive retirement resource with an added bonus: it's a lot of fun. Read Ted Goff's cartoons, participate in an online chat, or join their pen pal program. If you have a hobby you enjoy, check out their Hobbies and Crafts section.
A weekly magazine published for active, older adults is Grand Times, which highlights topics on grandchildren, travel, fiction, and more.
Visit Senior.Com's chat room to make new online friends, or see Jim's Tech Tips for technical advice. Also available is Town Square, a guide to the best web resources for seniors.
Senior.Site is dedicated to providing an interesting and entertaining website for people over 50. You'll find jokes, information on physical ailments, grandparenting resources, laws and legislation, and even poems and prose.
The Third Age is the new, extended period of active adulthood that starts in the early 50s. ThirdAge.com is an online society filled with ideas and interactions of the Third Agers themselves. You'll discover a chat room, discussion forums, a writer's studio, and numerous articles of interest to those over 50.
If you're looking for a new hobby, visit Yahoo! Recreation: Hobbies and Crafts, which contains a comprehensive listing of hobbies including gardening, collecting, and photography.
For over 5000 links to sites of interest to the over-50 age group, visit the Age of Reason website. The site features a Seniors Discount Mall and a search engine exclusively for those over 50.
The Department of Health and Human Services Administration on Aging provides an enormous warehouse of information for older persons, their families, practitioners, and other professionals.
Next week, we'll look at some fun online games.
