Animal Lovers--Check out the Net!

By Robin Nobles (8/1/97)

Our Spotlight on Hattiesburg Websites this week aims toward a wonderful 8th grader, Amelia Steadman. Since Amelia is a major Astros fan, her website is located at Houston Astros Online. At the site, scroll down to the very bottom and click on Astros Fans Home Pages Section. Then look for Amelia Steadman's Astros Page. Great site, Amelia!

If you're an animal lover like me, you'll want to learn of websites about your pet. No matter what type of pet you have--dog, cat, fish, hamster, turtle, or snake <shiver>--you'll find what you need to know on the Internet. Remember though, that while the Internet may contain valuable information to help you care for your pet, nothing can take the place of a good local veterinarian.

Let's begin with Healthy Pets, a fabulous site sponsored by the American Animal Hospital Association. The site features a pet care library, pet care tips, and a kids coloring page.

A site you simply can't miss isNetVet/Electronic Zoo Animal Information and Archives. You'll find information on rodents, amphibians, ferrets, rabbits, reptiles--you name it. Wildlife and zoo animals are listed as well as a section containing animal sounds.

If you like little creatures that swim under water and blow bubbles, check out the Fish Information Service. The site features information about both salt and fresh water aquariums, tropical and temperate. You'll find catalogs of marine and freshwater fish, disease information, and even software you can download. If it has to do with fish, you'll find it here.

Maybe you're one of the lucky few who own a horse. If so, I'm green with envy, but I'll point you in the right direction anyway. Check out Horse Country Online, where you'll find a veterinary section, horse stories and images, and learn about different horses from around the world. Young Entry Activity Pages feature puzzles, mazes, and games aimed toward four to eight year olds.

I suppose anyone named Robin would have to like birds, and I do. An Avian Resource--HotSpot for Birds is a wonderful site featuring bird care guides, nutrition information, and articles such as How to Manage Feather Picking. If you're in the market for a bird, you can even purchase one at the site.

Now here's a cute site: WWW.Wolfs. Click on the Front Page to find articles such as Heat Warning for Dogs, Deadly Tick Disease Spreads Across Nation, and Tame the Wolf Within Your Dog. Visit the Breeder Section to see champion grade dogs.

Cats All Over the Web contains link after link of kitty-related sites. Find breeder referral lists, vaccination schedules, and cat clubs galore.

Visit a very touching site called Rainbow Bridge, which deals with pet loss. The site would be an excellent place to take a child who's lost a beloved pet. "Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together."

Since school is beginning to start, let's look at education sites next week. See you then.
