Football Season Kicks Off on the Internet
By Robin Nobles (9/98)
With the NFL's regular season opening games being played on September 6, football enthusiasts are getting prepared to watch their favorite teams in action. On the Internet, you can learn the latest stats on pro football players, keep up with late-breaking news stories about NFL or college teams, or even join chat sessions with other football fans.
The Pros
Let's begin at the official site of the National Football League, NFL.com. This impressive site offers the 1998 NFL schedule, preseason statistics, and information on each NFL team. Click on the emblem of your favorite team to go to their Front Page, where you'll find a roster of players, the coaching staff, team information, and even a store where you can order jerseys, collectibles, tailgate supplies, and more.
Another excellent site for information on the NFL is Yahoo! Sports: National Football League. Play free fantasy football over the Internet, or read articles about the latest football news. Look up individual stats for the players, or read recaps of the games you missed seeing.
For current news about Canadian football, visit the Canadian Football League's Official Site. You'll find individual statistics on the players, full stories about each game, team standings, player bios, roster updates, and much more.
College Football
For college football information, stop by the College Sports Internet Channel. Look up the state of your favorite college team, and you'll find a listing of websites for the teams in that area.
CBS SportsLine features an impressive college football website, complete with news columns, photos, and even audio clips from some of the coaches and players. Learn who the top candidates are for the Heisman Trophy, what's going on in each conference, or listen to live radio shows over the Net.
The Greatest College Football Finishes are based on one play that, for the most part, wins the game. For some of the games, you can even listen to a play-by-play call!
Impressive Sites
Visit Football Central's Playing Field for information on the NFL, CFL, college ball, fantasy sports, flag & touch football, youth ball, semi-pro ball, and much more. Coaching Central offers useful tools for coaches, such as Coaching Message Boards and a free monthly newsletter covering coaching topics. At Gridiron Central, you can check out football information in other countries.
If you'd like to chat with other football fans, visit Football Chat. The site features chat rooms for other popular sports as well.
