Football Fever on the Internet
by Robin Nobles
Fall is the time of year that sprouts football widows. But in case you aren't getting enough football on Monday, Friday, or Saturday nights, let's sample some football sites on the Internet.
On the New Orleans' Saints site, you can find team statistics, NFL standings, recap of this week's game, team history, and even photographs. http://cgi.nando.net/SportServer/football/nfl/nos.html
Yahoo Scoreboard and the Sports Network both have college football sites:
Yahoo: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/
College Football World Wide Web Site is the home page for a newsgroup, rec.sport.football.college. It contains basic information plus rules and even fight songs. http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~dwilson/rsfc/
Now, let's go to the pros. NFL.COM lists things such as AFC and NFC players of the week, fastest man and run to daylight competitions, as well as a chat room for NFL fans. http://www.nfl.com/
The American Sports Headquarters' site is fabulous. It's divided up into the AFC teams and the NFC teams, and each team has quite a few links. Pro football fans need to check out this site:
AFC Teams: http://www.sport-hq.com/spectate/football/afctms.shtml
NFC Teams: http://www.sport-hq.com/spectate/football/nfctms.shtml
Additional sites for professional football:
Pro Football Hall of Fame: http://pathfinder.com/@@oe7R5gQA@hhqDNnz/si/ canton/index.html
ESPNET SportsZone: http://espnet.sportszone.com/
The Football Server: http://www.nando.net/SportServer/football/
Leonard's Sports Trivia of the Day: http://www.leonardsworlds.com/totrivia.htm
On the Internet, you can join "lists" on just about any topic imaginable. When you join, you'll get mail directly into your email box and you can enter into discussions with people on the list. At the Liszt site, you can find several football lists to which you can subscribe. Some of them are: NFL Statistics, NY Giants, Denver Broncos, and a Husky Football list. For more information: http://www.liszt.com/cgi-bin/liszt.cgi
America's Sports Headquarters listed several newsgroups. Here's just a few of them:
* Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, and New Orleans Saints Newsgroups
General Football Newsgroups:
* fj.rec.sports.football
* Football Collectibles Newsgroup and NFL Football Coverage Newsgroup
* rec.sport.football.pro
Newsgroups can be accessed through services such as Prodigy and AOL, through your browser (like Netscape), or through a separate newsgroup program. For further information, go to:
http://www.sport-hq.com/spectate/football/nflchat.shtml
America's Sports Headquarters also has two chat rooms. The address is listed below.
* Netgen NFL Chat Room or NFL Info Web Chat Room http://www.sport-hq.com/spectate/football/nflchat.shtml
I found several shareware or freeware football games that can be downloaded over the Internet. The following are Windows 3.x games which can be downloaded from the address below:
footchal.zip (Football Game)
nfl1993.zip (Season Forecaster for National League Football)
nfltpw.zip (Office Pool Tracker for National League Football)
wfball11.zip (Windows Football Game)
http://www.jumbo.com/pages/games/windows/sports/
This Win95 game can be downloaded from the above site in its Win95 section:
ufl10.zip (Universal Football League in text only format)
Let me know if you have any topics you'd like to explore. Next week, we'll look at music sites on the Web. Until then, enjoy the Net!
