Resources Geared Toward Fathers

By Robin Nobles (6/18/99)

With Father’s Day approaching, let’s see what resources we can find to help us celebrate the holiday.

Fathering Magazine is an excellent place to start our tour, since everything on the site is geared toward fathers. The site offers a glance at fatherhood from both a humorous and a serious perspective, and it provides articles of particular interest to fathers, such as "Suggestions for the New Single Father" and "Emergency Room." Visitors can also participate in interactive forums in topics such as Child Health or Child Custody.

Your child might enjoy making some crafts for dad in honor of his special day. At Happy Father’s Day at the Kids’ Exchange, they’ll also find ideas of fun things to do with dad, such as watching a movie, coloring a picture, posting a tribute, or printing out a coupon or certificate just for dad. Craft ideas include a handprint paperweight, a handprint poem gift, or a rustic stick frame.

Another impressive site is the National Center for Fathering, which was established "to inspire and equip men to be better fathers." At the site, you’ll find practical fathering tips in categories such as Involvement in Education, Protecting and Providing, and Teaching Kids about Money. Or, you can meet other dads in the chat room or forums.

Want to send your dad an online greeting card? Visit Father’s Day Cards from Care-Mail for a wonderful selection.

Now, let’s look at some sites that many fathers would enjoy. For a high tech look at the automobile industry, visit The Auto Channel. The site is slow to load but offers an impressive amount of information on automobiles, including easy car care tips, racing news, and new and used car buying guides.

Those who enjoy fishing should visit The Fishing Network, which features articles from existing print magazines as well as unique articles for the site, authored by professional writers and fisherman. The site also provides online chat rooms or forums.

Golfers will appreciate Golf Universe, which offers information on over 24,000 golf courses. You’ll also find golf tips, golf jokes, and a golfer’s dictionary, which doesn’t even crack the surface of this impressive site. You can even download free software, such as a golf scoring system.

Finally, for a well-rounded sports site, sponsored by the Cable News Network and Sports Illustrated, visit CNN/SI, where visitors can access information on practically any U.S. sport. Click on Fun & Games for online sports-related games such as Coach’s Quest Baseball ’99, or access SportsParents.com, where you can view articles and information of interest to parents whose kids play sports.
