School Can't Be Starting Already!

By Robin Nobles (8/98)

Where has the summer gone? Can you believe school is here? I can't! Anyway, thank goodness for the Internet, which hosts an enormous powerhouse of information on education to help our kids get off to a great start this school year.

Believe it or not, our first site is written by an 11-year old from Pennsylvania. At B.J. Pinchbeck's Homework Helper, you'll find over 500 links to sites that will help your kids with their homework projects. Categories include News and Current Events, Social Studies, English, and Foreign Languages. The site has won over 102 web awards, so be sure to check it out.

Another excellent site for doing research is Study Web, which offers a collection of over 73,000 research quality links. Whoa. You can search the site, or you'll find a breakdown of categories such as Composition, Criminology, Philosophy, Religion, Animals/Pets, and Geography. Teachers, be sure to check out The Classroom Internet for tips on incorporating the Internet into your classroom.

Homework Central is "The Biggest Study Site on the Internet, Linking to Everything That's Fit to Learn!" The site offers several ways of finding information: a search engine, a quick navigational guide, and other clickable categories, such as 122 Subject Search Engines, or 100 Special Homework Indexes. You'll find chat rooms, bulletin boards, resources for teachers, and even resources for 1st through 6th grade only.

At Comcast Online Schoolyard, you'll discover multimedia experiences, such as links to historical speeches, where you can hear Richard Nixon, Winston Churchill, or JFK give one of their monumental speeches. In the Playground, you'll find information about online virtual field trips, top-notch organizations for students, or fun, yet educational, sites for kids.

High school students will be interested in the Cool & Useful Student Resources website. All of the links lead to actual sources of information, rather than to another directory of links, which could shorten the time needed to dig for facts. Categories include Economics, Foreign Languages, Writing, Math, Science, and Art/Art History.

If your child is in middle school, or grades 6 through 9, The Cyberspace Middle School is where they need to be. The science fair project area is superb, where you'll find descriptions of possible projects, learn how to plan a project, or find links to science fair resources all over the Web. In the Activity Center, you'll discover a wide variety of interactive, multimedia activities available in areas such as Astronomy, the Weather, and Wildlife.
