November is National Diabetes Month

By Robin Nobles (11/6/98)

Did you know that sixteen million Americans have diabetes, and one in three don't know it? Diabetes is more common in certain ethnic groups, such as African Americans and Hispanics. Since November is National Diabetes Month, let's visit the Internet for some sites on this dreaded disease.

Keep in mind, however, that though these sites offer extensive information about diabetes, don't rely on them for medical advice. Instead, always consult your physician.

One of the best sources for diabetes' information is the American Diabetes Association. If you think you may be at risk for getting the disease, click on "Are You at Risk" and take a quick online test. Visit "Diabetes Info" for facts on diabetes; information for the newly diagnosed; how to live with the disease; help for teachers; and even what to do if your pet gets diabetes. The site offers a recipe of the day, such as Cheese-Y Lima Beans, which sounds delicious!

Did you know that beginning on July 1, 1998, Medicare will cover blood sugar test strips, lancets, and meters for all Medicare enrollees, whether or not insulin is used to control the disease? If you are on Medicare, visit the ADA's Medicare Awareness Campaign to learn the details of this new coverage.

If your child has diabetes, be sure to visit the Children with Diabetes Online Community. Not only will you find a mountain of information on how to handle diabetes in a school setting, food and diet help, and diabetes basics, but you'll also find the support you need from other parents. Access their message boards to ask questions, or visit their chat room.

If you're interested in research for diabetes, visit the Joslin Diabetes Center's website. You can request a free packet on the latest diabetes research, or a report on islet transplantation. The site also offers articles on diabetes, such as the importance of flu shots. Click on the Education Center for an online diabetes library, as well as access to discussion groups.

Living with diabetes requires a lot of adjustments, including lifestyle changes in eating habits. Sponsored by the authors of two Joslin diabetic cookbooks, Diabetic-Lifestyle offers recipes that kids will love, meals and travel advice, how to burn calories, and even cooking tips.

Finally, the Diabetes Directory offers a no-nonsense look at diabetes-related newsgroups, email lists, and websites, including information on software programs for the management of the disease and facts on medications used in treatment.
