Attention Deficit Disorders
By Robin Nobles
Between 3 to 5 percent of all American children--up to 3.5 million--have an Attention Deficit Disorder. ADD is a leading cause of school failure and under-achievement and is often accompanied by poor self-esteem and behavioral difficulties. The following Internet sites are intended to provide information and educational material and are not designed to provide medical advice. Please consult your own physician regarding any medical issues.
Let's begin with CH.A.D.D., Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders, a nonprofit parent-based organization formed to better the lives of individuals with ADD and those who care for them. The site features categories such as parenting a child with ADD, ADD in the classroom, adults with ADD, and legal rights and services.
The ADD/ADHD Library: For Teachers, Parents, and Adults contains general ADD information as well as helpful guides for teachers, parents, and adults with ADD.

Michael Schelling's Missing Children site contains a comprehensive listing of ADD and Dyslexia Websites, and much more.
At the A.D.D. WareHouse, click on Enter our Warehouse, then on Articles on A.D.D. You'll find a medication chart, an accommodation plan for teaching, and an assessment of ADD.
A virtual neighborhood providing resources and information about ADD, ADHD, and Learning Disabilities is One A.D.D. Place. You'll find a General Adult ADD Symptom Checklist and a test to see if you're an adrenaline junkie. Read articles such as "ADD and Success in School."
"Having ADHD is like being put into a dark room with things scattered around to trip you. You don't get a flashlight...but everyone else does. You trip around the room, bumping into things, until you finally learn the layout of the room. Then someone moves you to a new room, and the process starts again." The ADHD Owner's Manual discusses the feelings of having ADHD, tips for teachers, educational and behavioral intervention, and medications.
Mediconsult.com: Attention Deficit Disorders features drug information, educational materials, support groups, and success stories. Read the latest news regarding ADD, such as "Transdermal-administered drug for ADHD in children."
The National Attention Deficit Disorder Association is an organization for adults and families with ADD. The site features information about the association itself as well as an online newsletter, adult support groups, and behaviors and diagnostics.
Next week, we'll hunt for a job on the Internet. See you then!
