and a Remembrance of Our Heritage
By Robin Nobles (11/13/98)
Whether you're interested in a new recipe for dressing or pumpkin pie, or whether you want some Thanksgiving-related games for the kids to play, you're in luck with the Internet.
Food
If you're looking for recipes, look no further than Epicurious Thanksgiving. You'll discover recipes for appetizers, birds and stuffing, relishes and sauces, soups and salads, vegetables, breads, and desserts. How do Spiced Cheese Straws sound to you? What about Maple-Glazed Roast Turkey with Mixed-Herb Gravy, or Pumpkin Bread Pudding with Cranberry Caramel Sauce? Sounds great to me!
For a slightly different twist to a traditional turkey dinner, why not try fried turkey? At Jim's Cajun Deep-Fried Turkey Page, you'll learn how to cook a ten-pound bird in 35 minutes!
Fun
Visit the Nuttin But Kids Thanksgiving Page to learn songs and fingerplays about Thanksgiving, art activities, games, science activities, and even Thanksgiving center activities for schools. Learn how to play "Pilgrim, Pilgrim, Where's your Hat?" or how to make a turkey planter.
How about a Thanksgiving word search puzzle, or coloring sheets you can print out? At Billy Bear's Happy Thanksgiving, you can also download Thanksgiving wallpaper or icons for your computer, or print out Thanksgiving stationery. Play online turkey games, or print out mazes. You can even send an online Thanksgiving postcard. The whole site is adorable and a "must see"!
At Kaplan's Turkey on the Web, download a free copy of Spin the Turkey, an addictive game that's "a better way to spend your time than boiling the turkey neck for grandma." The site also offers advice on holiday travel, ideas for Thanksgiving centerpieces, and delicious-sounding recipes like Praline Apple & Cranberry Pie.
Our Heritage
Plimouth (Plymouth) Plantation was the first permanent European settlement in southern New England and is now the site of a museum dedicated to recreating the 17th century lifeways of the New World. View pictures of a 17th century outdoor oven, 17th century homes, cultivating and hunting tools, and much more. The site is divided into exhibits such the reconstruction of a 1627 village occupied by the Pilgrims.
Read the story of Thanksgiving and learn about America's first Thanksgiving at Thanksgiving on the Net. You'll also discover information on the holiday's best-known symbol, the turkey.
Let's close with a wonderful listing of holiday websites, Thanksgiving on the World Wide Web. The site offers an abundance of links to Thanksgiving recipes, activities, history, and more.
