Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

By Robin Nobles

Thanksgiving . . . a time for delicious food, family gatherings, and remembering our many blessings.

Take a trip to the Talk'in Turkey Diner where you'll find tips on how to roast a turkey, safe food handling suggestions, and even games for kids. You'll find turkey recipes in categories such as Mexican, Oriental, appetizers, and cooking for company. Take the Turkey Trivia Challenge, or color Tater Turkey.

"Why do turkeys always go, 'gobble, gobble'?" Find out at An American Thanksgiving for Kids and Families. Learn about the First Thanksgiving, or go on a turkey hunt. The site features games, songs, and poems as well as low fat or vegetarian Thanksgiving recipes.

Visit Kaplan's Turkey on the Web for a "new spin on Thanksgiving." Download a free copy of Spin the Turkey game, or take a sweet potato survey. Preparations for the "big day" include A-Hunting We Will Go, making holiday travel plans, and yes, even football.

Now here's a wonderful site for kids: Heather's Happy Thanksgiving webpage. Kids are told to click on old Tom Turkey and follow him, then off he goes. As he hides behind a bush, kids choose which bush before he darts off again. This delightful site was designed by a 7-year old!

Do your kids enjoy arts and crafts? If so, be sure to visit Family Planet's Family Feast. The site features five Thanksgiving projects for dressing up the dinner table, such as corn print place mats or hatband napkin rings. Send an email Thanksgiving card from the site, or discover a "no fuss" Thanksgiving menu that you can prepare ahead of time.

At HomeArts: Thanksgiving, you'll find Thanksgiving excerpts from magazines such as COUNTRY LIVING, REDBOOK, and GOOD HOUSEKEEPING. Read a survival guide to Thanksgiving, 35 holiday recipes, or holiday party etiquette. You'll discover four ways to decorate with a pumpkin, or learn the best recipe for pumpkin pie--that doesn't use pumpkin!

"The giving of thanks...of all the profound gestures of the human heart, thanksgiving is the most communal, and the most basic." Thanksgiving Square is an international resource devoted to gathering and sharing the thanksgivings of the world.

Take a Thanksgiving quiz at Thanksgiving: Its History, Customs, & Traditions.

Thanksgiving on the Net offers the story of Thanksgiving, President Clinton's Thanksgiving Proclamation, and holiday goodies and games, including a Thanksgiving crossword puzzle.
